Product Introduction
1 Operational Principle
During digging operations, the bucket-wheel excavator remains in a fixed position. Material is excavated through the combined actions of the rotating bucket wheel mounted at the front and the slewing motion of the boom. As the buckets fill and rotate upward, they eventually reach a height where material is gravity-discharged onto a receiving conveyor. A hopper then directs the material to a discharge conveyor, where it is loaded into haul trucks or other conveying equipment for removal. Once a bench is fully excavated, the machine either moves forward or lowers its boom to access the next layer. Digging depth is determined by the travel distance or boom extension, while cutting width depends on the slewing speed. The excavator’s mobility is secondary to its continuous digging and conveying functions, which are carried out by the rotating bucket wheel and the conveyor system, respectively.
1.2 Structural Characteristics
The bucket-wheel excavator is composed of six primary subsystems: the undercarriage, slewing assembly, digging mechanism, conveyor system, electric drive, and hydraulic system. Notable features include:
(1) Undercarriage
Modern bucket-wheel excavators predominantly adopt crawler-based undercarriages, though some models utilize walking mechanisms. Medium and smaller units are usually equipped with two crawlers, whereas larger machines often employ multiple-crawler designs (such as three or four crawler tracks) to distribute ground pressure more effectively.
(2) Slewing System
This system includes a rotating platform and its drive components. The platform supports power generation units, drive machinery, control systems, and the operator’s cab. A slewing ring bearing allows the entire platform to rotate 360° about the vertical axis.
(3) Digging System
The digging system is made up of the bucket wheel, the boom, a luffing mechanism, and the corresponding drives. The bucket wheel—a rotating wheel with multiple evenly spaced digging buckets—is attached to the front section of the boom. The rear of the boom is pivot-mounted to the portal frame of the upper structure, allowing it to be raised and lowered through either wire ropes or hydraulic cylinders to position the bucket wheel across different digging horizons. Booms may be of fixed or telescopic type. The drive assembly (including motor, safety clutch, and reducer) is mounted offset near the front of the boom to power the rotation of the bucket wheel.
(4) Conveyor System
This subsystem comprises the receiving conveyor, a hopper, and the discharge conveyor. In bridge-type bucket-wheel excavators, an extra transfer conveyor is mounted on the bridge structure.
(5) Electric Drive System
Power is supplied from an external source, with frequency converters used to regulate motor speed and operation.
(6) Hydraulic System
Hydraulic cylinders serve as the primary actuators for adjusting the position of the digging and discharge booms.
