Operational Methodology
The bucket-wheel excavator performs excavation while stationary, leveraging synchronized rotation of its front-mounted bucket wheel and boom slewing to shear and collect materials into the buckets. Upon reaching a designated height during rotation, materials discharge via gravity onto the intake conveyor, which routes them through a hopper to the discharge conveyor for loading onto transport vehicles. Post-layer excavation, the machine advances linearly or adjusts boom elevation to excavate subsequent vertical layers. Layer depth is governed by machine displacement or boom extension, while excavation breadth depends on slewing rate. Mobility functions secondarily to the primary continuous excavation and conveyor-based material transfer processes.

Structural Architecture
The excavator integrates six fundamental systems: crawler undercarriage, rotational assembly, excavation unit, material transport system, electrical drive system, and hydraulic regulation system. Key design elements comprise:

(1) Crawler Undercarriage
Modern units predominantly feature crawler-track mobility, with select models using walking mechanisms. Medium/small excavators employ dual-track systems, whereas large-scale variants utilize multi-track configurations (3-4 tracks) to optimize ground pressure distribution.

(2) Full-Circumferential Rotation System
Combining a rotating upper structure and azimuthal drive mechanisms, this assembly houses power systems, transmission components, control interfaces, and the operator station. A slewing ring bearing facilitates 360° rotation of the upper structure about its vertical axis.

(3) Excavation Unit
Consists of a bucket-wheel assembly, articulated boom, elevation control mechanism, and drive components. The bucket wheel – a circular array of evenly distributed digging buckets – is positioned at the boom tip. The boom pivots through a portal frame connection at its base, with angular positioning managed by cable winches or hydraulic cylinders to maintain optimal cutting plane orientation. Boom types include fixed-length and telescopic designs. The bucket-wheel drive unit (electric motor, safety torque limiter, and gearbox) is laterally mounted near the boom front for power transmission efficiency.

(4) Material Transport System
Features sequential components: primary intake conveyor, buffer hopper, and discharge conveyor. Bridge-configured models integrate an additional transfer conveyor within the bridging module for extended material routing capabilities.

(5) Electrical Drive System
Employs grid-fed variable frequency drive (VFD) technology for precise motor speed and torque control.

(6) Hydraulic Regulation System
Primarily utilizes hydraulic actuators for boom elevation management and discharge conveyor positioning, ensuring operational precision in dynamic excavation environments.
