Working Principle
During material excavation, the bucket-wheel excavator remains stationary. It relies on the compound motion generated by the rotation of its front-mounted bucket wheel and the slewing of the boom to continuously cut and load materials into the buckets. When the buckets ascend to a specific height during rotation, materials are discharged by gravity onto the receiving conveyor belt. These materials are then transferred via a hopper to the discharge conveyor belt, where they are loaded into trucks or other transport systems for delivery to designated locations. After completing excavation at one layer, the machine either moves forward or lowers its boom to begin excavating the next layer downward. The thickness of the excavated material layer is controlled by the machine’s forward travel distance or boom extension, while the excavation width is determined by the slewing speed. The excavator’s mobility is auxiliary, with continuous operation maintained by the bucket wheel for digging and conveyor belts for material transport.
Structural Features
The bucket-wheel excavator consists of six main systems: undercarriage, slewing system, working system, conveying system, electric drive system, and hydraulic system. Key characteristics include:
(1) Undercarriage System
Most modern bucket-wheel excavators employ a crawler-type undercarriage, with a minority using walking mechanisms. Medium and small excavators typically feature dual crawlers, while large-scale models utilize multi-crawler configurations (triple or quadruple crawlers) to reduce ground pressure.
(2) Slewing System
Comprising a rotating platform and slewing drive components, the platform houses power units, drive mechanisms, control systems, and the operator cabin. Equipped with a slewing bearing, the drive system enables 360° rotation of the platform around the vertical axis.
(3) Working System
Consists of the bucket wheel, boom, luffing mechanism, and drive components. The bucket wheel—a rotating wheel with evenly distributed buckets—is mounted at the boom’s front end. The boom is hinged to the platform’s portal frame at its rear, allowing angular adjustment via wire ropes or hydraulic cylinders to position the bucket wheel across excavation planes. Boom configurations include fixed-length and telescopic variants. The bucket wheel drive assembly (motor, safety coupling, and reducer) is positioned laterally at the boom’s front to power rotation.
(4) Conveying System
Includes the receiving conveyor belt, hopper, and discharge conveyor belt. Bridge-connected bucket-wheel excavators additionally feature a transfer conveyor on the connecting bridge.
